5 Things to Know Before Calling AC Repair

But before you do that, there are a few things that you can do yourself to see if you can fix the problem. Here are five things to know before calling an air conditioning repair company.

1. Check Your Settings

Your air conditioning may not be broken — your settings might have just been adjusted incorrectly.

Is your thermostat set to ‘heat’ instead of ‘cool’? Have you set it to ‘auto’ to make sure that it turns on?

Check the basic settings like that before you pay money for a repairman to come out and press a button. Odds are that neither party will be happy in that situation.

2. Check Your Filter

You need to change your air conditioning filter regularly to make sure that the entire system functions correctly. Ideally, you should change it each month.

Your filter keeps both your AC system and the air you breathe clean. If that’s not enough to convince you, a filter that’s super clogged can shut down your whole system.

Make sure you check that your filter is clean before you call the repair company.

3. Make Sure Your Breaker Is Working

Is it just your AC that isn’t working all of a sudden, or are other things suddenly silent as well?

It might not be a problem with your air conditioner, but rather your circuit breaker. Check the breaker on the outside of your house to see if it’s been tripped. If it has been, reset it.

It may also be a wider problem in your community — check to see if your neighbours have power or not. If it’s a problem with the bigger system, an AC repair team won’t be able to help.

4. Double Check Your Outdoor Unit

Is the outdoor unit running? Is there debris blocking the condenser?

Don’t forget that there’s another aspect to your AC unit to double check before you pick up the phone. If your outdoor unit isn’t running at all (you don’t hear humming or any activity), you might have a larger issue. This is important for the repairman to know.

The unit may also be working fine, but you just need to clear away some debris in order for it to function properly.

5. Check Your Switches

Finally, check all of the switches. Was the indoor unit accidentally switched to off? Did someone disconnect the indoor unit from the outdoor unit without realizing?

These are so simple that they’re easy to forget about, but you should make sure everything is on and connected. You could save yourself time and money.
